MEHNDI

One of the most common (and important) prewedding event is the mehndi party. It's here that the couple is joined by their loved ones to get henna (or mehndi designs) applied to their hands before the wedding day. Guests will also have a chance to get mehndi done on their hands at the event. Music, dancing, and food will accompany henna activities.

Please come dressed in casual and colorful attire!

This event is reserved for close friends and family.

WEDDING

We will start the wedding off with a nikah ceremony. A nikah is a Muslim wedding ceremony and marriage contract that unites a couple in a legal and religious union. The bride and groom sign the nikah contract in the presence of witnesses. The ceremony will include family and couple walking down the aisle, opening remarks, short speech from Imam Jihad, prayers, and the exchange of vows.

From there we will continue celebrations with food, dancing, and music (just like any other wedding)!

Some Pakistani traditions you may see taking place during the wedding are:

Doodh Pilai

This tradition adds a fun element to the wedding day celebration. The bride’s sisters/cousins give the groom a beautifully adorned glass of milk (or a mystery substance for those who are more mischievous). He must drink and pay for it to take the bride home. But before he can pay for it, a price must be haggled between the two sides. Join the couple to haggle for your chosen side!

Joota Chupai (Hiding the Shoe)

Another entertaining tradition is joota chupai. The bride's sisters, cousins, and friends unsuspectingly hide and steal his shoe during the reception. In order to get it back, they will demand an amount of money in exchange, and a bargaining game begins. On the other side, the groom’s brothers and friends make every effort to find the groom’s shoes and haggle a lower price.
